End of the SPA project

The exhibition last week marked the end of the Secret Preston Art project.

Since January 2012 twelve different artists were asked to contribute to Secret Preston Art.
Their artworks were made into a limited edition card that was given out for free in a number of venues in Preston city centre to whoever found them. Each edition was limited to 100.
Maybe some of the cards are now lost, maybe some are treasured - but each card was given out as a little gift to celebrate an obscure festival held here every 20 years called the Preston Guild.

The Secret Preston Art project could not have happened without the twelve artists being involved and giving their time - and so the biggest thank-you goes to them all. Each artist made beautiful, incredible artworks especially for Preston - how wonderful is that?

Here are the 12 artworks that were made into the limited edition cards:

Michael Lewy:

Mark Dion:
Lubaina Himid:

Thomas Saible:

Adrianne Neil:

Katie Holten:

Hemali Bhuta:

Toby Paterson:

David Nash:

Alec Finlay with Hanna Tuulikki:

Confidential:

Urs Luethi:

For more information on the individual artists please scroll down the SPA blog - we've put links to their websites and galleries so you can find out more about their work.

The Final SPA Card - Urs Luethi

We are very proud to announce that the final SPA artist is Urs Luethi - fantastic!

All the limited edition postcards are now available for FREE and can be found in Preston at Scene and Wonderland on Friargate, The Museum of Lancashire, the Pavilion in Avenham Park, The Tourist Info Centre and the Continental Pub. What are you waiting for? They'll not be around for long - go and get one for yourself!

Urs Luethi was born in Switzerland and lives in Germany. Working with photography, print, painting, sculpture and performance, his work takes a wry look at the aesthetic of the human condition. Frequently presenting self portraits his work is witty, ironic and loaded with tongue-in-cheek humour.

Luethi represented Switzerland at the Venice Biennial  in 2001 where he presented himself as part of the exhibition.

He has shown work extensively worldwide: Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Iceland, UK, Austria, Japan, Australia, USA and Canada. His work is held in a number of national collections: Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Kunstmuseum in Bern, Centre Pompidou in Paris and Tate in London.

He is currently showing work in A Bigger Splash at Tate Modern in London and in Glam! The Performance of Style at Tate Liverpool. And now he has work in Preston too - how exciting!

For more information on his work please visit his website:

http://www.ursluethi.com/

We are delighted that our final limited edition postcard is by Urs Luethi. 100 numbered cards are now available in the venues listed above - please don't miss this chance to collect a little artwork by such an internationally significant artist: when all the cards are gone - they're gone.

The Final SPA Card is Coming!!

The final Secret Preston Art card is coming and, if we say so ourselves - it's an absolute corker!

You really shouldn't miss this final limited edition postcard brought to you for free by Secret Preston Art.

It is being stamped and wrapped ready to go into all the venues around Preston city centre and should be available from Tuesday this week...

Friday 1 February 2013

New Card - Confidential!

There's a new SPA card out today and for obvious reasons the artist will remain confidential... how intriguing!

You can collect a free limited edition postcard from The Museum of Lancashire, The Conti Pub, The Pavilion in Avenham Park, the Tourist Info Centre, Scene on Friargate and Wonderland on Friargate too.

The postcard image shows only a section of the full artwork located somewhere within Preston city centre.

This work is part of an ongoing, unspoken dialogue between the artist and the authorities concerning their policy on the 'removal' of graffiti.

In subtle reference to 3D lettering, the simple addition to these blocks of painted 'censorship' calls into question the aim of the policy. Who is the offender/defender of the space?

The artwork has already been painted over and no longer exists -  with the blocks of black paint expanding to cover it. Such is the ephemeral nature of graffiti.

All the free cards have gone into the venues listed above - so go and collect one before they all get snapped up.

Alec Finlay is and artist and poet based in Edinburgh. He uses text, print, sculpture and collage, audio-visual and digital technology in his work to reflect our interaction with nature. His work considers how we as a culture, or cultures, relate to landscape.
